Ofori Amponsah has shared the inspiring story of his path to stardom, recounting years of struggle, perseverance, and the unlikely encounter that changed his life forever.
In an interview with Berla Mundi on Sunday, October 20, Ofori Amponsah opened up about how close he came to giving up on his musical dreams, only to be propelled forward by a fateful meeting with legendary highlife musician, Daddy Lumba.
Amponsah’s journey began with humble steps. “I was in school, and after classes, I’d just grab my CDs and go around looking for someone who would listen to my songs,” he recalled. His persistence led him to a small CD shop in Lapaz, Accra, on what he thought would be his last attempt to push his music.
“I had been trying for about four years, and nothing seemed to work. I got to that shop, asked the guy if he produced music, and he said no. But then he asked if I had a song.
When I played my tracks for him, he started nodding and told me the songs were great. He then mentioned that Daddy Lumba was looking for young talents to mentor. That guy was my breakthrough,” Amponsah shared.
Despite the spark of hope, Amponsah’s road to success was far from immediate. He explained how meeting Daddy Lumba gave him a glimmer of hope after years of disappointment.
“The first day, I couldn’t meet him. I went back the next day, and when Daddy Lumba saw me, he said, ‘Are you Ofori Amponsah? You, this small boy, sang that song?’” Amponsah smiled as he recounted the moment.
“Then he handed me an envelope with GHC5,000—those days, that was a lot of money—and said, ‘You are a star.’”
However, despite this encouraging gesture, Amponsah’s struggles were far from over. He revealed that it took another four to five years before his music would finally be released. “There was a problem.

“Daddy Lumba gave up on production, and I was still in school at the time. I got sacked for choosing to sing over my studies, so I was literally on the streets for about four years,” he shared. The artist was left in limbo, with no certainty of when or if his songs would ever see the light of day.
But in what he calls “divine intervention,” things eventually fell into place. “By some miracle, the songs were finally released. That’s how my career started,” Amponsah said, reflecting on the long and winding road to his musical debut.
Today, Ofori Amponsah is known for timeless hits like Otoolege and Emmanuella, but his journey to fame was marked by years of uncertainty, sacrifice, and a burning desire to succeed. His story is a reminder that success often comes at the price of patience and perseverance, and sometimes, all it takes is one person to believe in your dream.
In his final words, Amponsah expressed gratitude for the lessons he learned through his struggles. “Looking back, I realize those hard times were necessary. They shaped who I am today. I want everyone to know that no matter how long it takes, if you have a dream, don’t give up. Your breakthrough might be closer than you think.”
