Nana Obiri Boahen, a former deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has spoken out against Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a current NPP member, for his criticism of former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo for taking part in a protesting exercise by pensioners.
According to Obiri Boahen, Gabby should not have criticized the former Chief Justice for taking part in the protest by pensioners on February 10 against the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP), because everyone has different opinions on various topics.
In an interview with Okay FM, Nana Obiri Boahen believes there is no reason for people to insult the former Chief Justice if she participates in a demonstration.
Obiri Boahen noted that the party should be extremely careful when making comments like the one Gabby made about Sophia Akuffo, as they will not help the party and may make people involved angry.
“She’s human, and people are entitled to their own opinions. You can’t blame the Minister of Finance or the government for raising the issue in the first place; they’ve made it clear that things have deteriorated to a point where we need everyone’s help”.
Due to the democratic nature of protesting. Picketers don’t need to resort to violence to make their point, and they certainly won’t be using any weapons.
Since Monday, February 6, 2023, pensioners have been picketing outside the ministry in protest of the government’s plan to include their bonds in the DDEP.
Sophia Akufo was photographed at the Ministry’s headquarters while seated in the front and holding a wooden sign. On her sign, it said: “We pay our rent, medical bills, electricity, and water bills with the interest we get from our bonds”.
However, a prominent NPP member, Gabby Otchere-Darko, claims that former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo made a mistake by joining a protest outside the Finance Ministry with bondholders pensioners.
He argues that since pensioners have been given the option to self-exempt, there is no point in holding a protest. In a series of tweets, he said “The former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, may mean well but she erred big time in her basic appreciation of the issues. Rather than asking the Govt for exemption at this late hour, why did she simply not ‘exempt’ herself from exchanging her original bond for the new one!”
