A video featuring several 32-inch smart TVs adorned with the image of Yendi’s current Member of Parliament, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has ignited social media discussions ahead of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.

The video which surfaced a few days to the election, has reignited discussions on the issue of vote-buying and the escalating trend of monetizing ballots in Ghana’s politics.

While some social media users question the rationale and priority of distributing TVs over addressing developmental issues in Yendi, others express concern about the apparent extravagance amid local challenges.

Some social media users believe the money being spent by the MP supposedly to finance the supply of the TV’s sets to induce delegates, could be channeled into development in Yendi which is one of the poorest constituencies in Ghana.

Notably, some individuals have brought the matter to the attention of the Office of Special Prosecutor, urging an investigation into the Member of Parliament for alleged vote-buying.

The NPP is set to conduct its parliamentary primaries on Saturday, January 27, 2023, with Farouk Aliu Mahama facing strong competition from Hajia Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, the Chief Executive Officer of Microfinance and Loans Centre (MASLOC).

Farouk Aliu Mahama, who assumed office in 2020, is seeking re-election in the upcoming primaries.
