A spokesperson for the Alan Kyerematen campaign, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has endorsed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his preferred flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party.
Speaking in an interview with UTV’s Adekye Nsroma, Yaw Buaben said, “Nana Addo has endorsed Bawumia… We all know Akuffo Addo is backing Dr. Bawumia; he’s an establishment candidate. The establishment is Nana Addo; it’s no secret. Yaa, you saying that Alan’s strength has always decreased anytime we vote is not true; it is not Alan’s strength that is reducing, but it’s the party that said no matter what it takes, Nana Addo has to become president.”
There were allegations that President Akufo-Addo pressured delegates to vote for an “establishment candidate” in the party’s primary election. The president, however, denied the charges. He said that the majority of the candidates are urging him to support their choice of flagbearer. He claimed, however, that he has not sponsored any of the flagbearer-hopefuls. He asserts that he cannot control the results of the elections.
After voting in the super delegates congress on Saturday, August 26, President Akufo-Addo spoke with reporters and emphasized that the flagbearer must rally support from all members of the party to help end the 8-year electoral cycle.
”There are some who are calling on me to endorse their candidate but I haven’t endorsed anyone,” he stressed.
