Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has criticized the Minority in Parliament for opting out of a crucial three-day orientation program for Members of the 9th Parliament, currently ongoing at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho.
The program is designed to equip MPs with essential parliamentary skills, but the Minority has refused to participate, citing concerns over cost.
At the opening session, Speaker Bagbin expressed his disappointment, stating that their reason for opting out was unacceptable.
“Our brothers and sisters of the New Patriotic Party have opted out, giving a reason that is completely unacceptable.”

He revealed that the Minority formally notified him of their decision on the night of Friday, February 28, explaining that they found the cost component excessive. “Their reason is that the cost component is too much, and they don’t want to be part of that.”
Responding to these concerns, Bagbin explained that the choice of venue was not politically motivated but was based on a thorough selection process.
“There is a good reason why we choose venues for this, it’s not partisan – there is always a search party, and they go round, discuss with the various hospitalities, look at the cost components, their facilities, their suitability, the convenience of your movement because there are other pressures on you, and there are score marks before we decide where to go.”
The orientation program is aimed at sharpening MPs’ skills in parliamentary practice, lobbying, advocacy, and effective debate.
It also seeks to enhance their understanding of their responsibilities as representatives of the people, ultimately contributing to the country’s democratic development.
