Not a Single Woman Helped Me – Nana Aba Anamoah on Breaking into TV

Despite being a household name in Ghanaian media today, Nana Aba Anamoah has revealed that her journey into television was far from easy—especially when it came to support from women in the industry.

In an interview on Joy Prime monitored by Ghanastreetjournal, she shared that after securing a radio job, she actively sought guidance from women at GTV to help her transition into television.

“I met several women at GTV and told them that my passion was TV. I asked for guidance, but not a single one of them helped me,” she revealed.

Instead, she found support from unexpected quarters.

“It was a man, E.L. Ankra, who helped me. He asked why I wanted to be on TV, and I told him because of Barbara Sam. He said, ‘That’s a flimsy reason. You need a better one,’ but he still guided me,” she recounted.

Her first experience on TV was nerve-wracking.

“My first day was a disaster, but E.L. kept pushing me. Meanwhile, the women were missing,” she noted.

However, she later found support in Gifty Anti.

“Gifty Anti treated me like her child. She would pick me up, discuss newspaper stories with me, and unknowingly, she was training me for TV news presentation,” Nana Aba shared.

Reflecting on her journey, she expressed her wish for more women to support each other in the media industry.

“If more women were there for women, we would do better,” she said, adding that one of the few women who truly mentored her was Emma Morrison.

“Emma Morrison made time for me, guided me, and trusted me. She didn’t even know that I was learning everything from her because I wanted her seat. And I got it,” she revealed with a smile.
