Ghanaians have not forgotten the frustrations that came with the previous SIM re-registration exercise.
From long queues at registration centers to system downtimes that left many stranded, the process was riddled with inefficiencies that sparked public outcry.
Now, Sam George, the Minister-designate for Communications, Digitalization, and Innovation, has vowed to take a different approach if given the nod.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Thursday, he assured that the mistakes of the past would not be repeated.
“We will do a proper SIM re-registration again, and this time, there will be no queues because common sense will prevail, and we will use technology to do it,” he said.
His remarks come after widespread complaints about the difficulties people faced during the previous exercise, which required citizens to link their Ghana Cards to their SIM cards.

Many had to endure long waiting hours at various centers, while others were unable to complete the process due to system failures and inadequate registration points. Some SIM cards were deactivated, leaving users without access to essential services.
Reflecting on these challenges, Mr. George criticized the manner in which the exercise was conducted.
“The way the previous exercise was conducted was cumbersome and did not serve the interest of Ghanaians. We cannot have people standing in long queues for hours just to re-register their SIM cards,” he stated.
His solution? A shift to a technology-driven system that eliminates unnecessary delays. “We will deploy digital solutions to make the exercise swift and convenient. People should be able to register their SIMs without unnecessary delays,” he assured.
While acknowledging the importance of SIM registration in preventing fraud and enhancing national security, he stressed the need for a more logical and user-friendly implementation.
“While SIM registration is crucial for our security, the implementation must be logical. We cannot compromise the public’s convenience,” he noted.
