Sam George Vows to Crack the Whip on Telecoms for Better Service Quality

In a strong statement during his vetting as Communications Minister-Designate, Sam George outlined his commitment to improving the quality of mobile voice services in Ghana.

He acknowledged the current shortcomings of the telecommunications sector and indicated that significant reforms would be necessary to provide Ghanaians with the high-quality service they deserve.

Addressing concerns about the state of mobile network operators (MNOs) in Ghana, Sam George emphasized the need for more spectrum to be allocated to telecom companies.

“As Minister-Designate I think no. I think that there is a lot of work that the telcos have to do because for you to get better quality you need to allocate more spectrum to the MNOs,” he said, suggesting that increasing the available spectrum would be crucial in enhancing service quality across the country.

Should he be confirmed in the role, Sam George promised to push for these changes, saying, “If approved by this house, one of the things we will do is make more spectrum available, however, we will be raising the KPIs and ensuring that the standards are met.”

This move is seen as an effort to bring a more structured and measurable approach to the telecom sector, one that holds mobile network operators accountable for providing high-quality services.

While expressing his willingness to work collaboratively with telecom companies, Sam George made it clear that he would not hesitate to impose fines on any MNOs failing to meet the required service standards.

“I will not be a Minister who will be afraid to impose fines on MNOs who fail to meet the quality of service.

Ghanaians deserve the best quality of service and we would crack the whip where necessary but we will also support the MNOs to ensure they get what is needed to provide us the best quality of service,” he stated.
