No End in Sight for ‘Dumsor’ Unless ECG Fixes Its Failures – IES Boss

Ghana’s ongoing power crisis, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ is unlikely to end anytime soon, according to the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, he attributed the nation’s energy challenges to inefficiencies within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the broader energy sector.

“Until the ECG fixes its inefficiency, collects enough of the revenue, and ensures that each participant within the energy sector gets a fair share of the revenue, we will continue to have this challenge,” he stated.

Nana Amoasi VII emphasized that the financial instability within the sector is affecting all key players, from power generation to distribution.

He warned that ECG’s struggles to collect revenue make it difficult for GRIDCo to invest in its ageing transmission infrastructure.

“It will be difficult for the transmitter, GRIDCo, to invest in its ageing infrastructure, and even with ECG and its infrastructure, it is suffering,” he explained.

The crisis also extends to power generation and fuel supply, with private and public power producers struggling to maintain operations.

He cautioned that without significant investment and reforms, the country’s energy supply will remain unreliable.

“It will be difficult for the power generator, be it public or private, to generate power because they also need to make some input into the power generation.

There will be difficulty for WAPCo to continue supplying the natural gas. So, we are in a very uncomfortable state,” he warned.

Given these systemic challenges, Nana Amoasi VII predicted that Ghanaians will have to endure power outages for the rest of the year unless urgent reforms are implemented.

“We know very well that we have these challenges, and until we address the inefficiencies in the ECG, I am sorry to say again that we will see dumsor till the end of the year.”
