Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems took home her first Grammy for Best Rap Melodic Performance on Future’s “Wait for You” alongside Drake. The song also received a Best Rap Song nomination.
On Sunday night at the cryto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Tems won her first Grammy for her contribution to Future’s smash hit single “Wait for U,” which also featured Drake. Tems is the first Nigerian and African to win a Grammy for “Best Melodic Rap Performance” with this victory.
Grammy winners Tems and British-Nigerian vocalist Sade Adu are the only two female musicians of Nigerian ancestry to date. In 1986, Sade won the Grammy for Best New Artist and brought home the trophy.
The “Try Me” singer rose to fame with her smash single duet with Wizkid, “Essence,” and since then has worked with some of the biggest names in the American music industry.
Beyoncé’s Renaissance has contributions from Tems, a musician who has earned a name for herself in recent years, and she is also nominated for Album of the Year. The “Higher” Singer was nominated for an Academy Award in 2023 for co-writing “Lift Me Up,” a song featured on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Burna Boy, who already has a Grammy on his mantle, didn’t win any of the two categories in which he was nominated this year. Both his album Love Damini and his single Last Last were up for nominations for the Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance categories.
