Nigerian comedian Ali Baba has voiced his frustration over a top musician’s extravagant spending habits, revealing how the artist wasted over N1.5 billion on a lavish lifestyle rather than making strategic investments.
The revelation came during a recent episode of the Eden Oasis Realty podcast, where Ali Baba shed light on the musician’s financial missteps.
According to Ali Baba, the musician earned approximately N400 million for a performance in Dubai and another N500 million for an international gig, amassing nearly N1 billion in a short period. However, instead of using the funds to secure his future, the artist chose to indulge in luxury purchases.
“The next thing, he has a Maybach, has another car and goes on a spree with jewellery and all other things,” Ali Baba recounted, emphasizing that in less than two to six months, the musician had burned through more than N1.5 billion.
Ali Baba, known for his sharp commentary on societal issues, expressed disappointment at the missed opportunities for long-term financial stability.
He pointed out that with such significant earnings, the artist could have made smarter choices, like purchasing land or building a recording studio.
“He would have bought land, done an event, and put a powerful studio upstairs. People will come there and shoot and do their music thing, and the venue will bring enough money to buy anything he wants,” Ali Baba explained.
The comedian also highlighted how the musician’s poor financial decisions became evident during personal milestones.
When it came time for the artist to get married, he had to rent a hall for the occasion. Ali Baba lamented, “If he had built the hall, he wouldn’t have needed to spend the money for the hall.”
Drawing comparisons to other artists like Asake, Ali Baba underscored the disparity in how banks and society view musicians versus business owners.
He shared a scenario where Asake would be denied a bank loan to fund a concert, despite the potential to make billions in a single night, while a car dealer could easily secure funds to import vehicles that might sit unsold for months.
