Nigeria’s main opposition parties are calling for new elections. At a joint press conference in the capital, Abuja, over vote counting delays and allegations of rigging push Bola Tinubu to the top of the polls in Nigeria’s presidential election.

The Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party, and the African Democratic Congress jointly released statements in Abuja on Tuesday saying that they would no longer participate in the ongoing collation process because they no longer trusted electoral commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

The political groups want fresh elections overseen by a new head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

There has been much controversy surrounding the election process, and tensions flared during the presentation of the results on Monday at the national collation center in Abuja.

The election “lacked transparency,” according to a number of observers, including the European Union.

According to a combined observation mission from the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute, “the election fell considerably short of the realistic expectations of Nigerian citizens” (NDI).

In an early post by Tru News Report which was publish on Monday night, former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo, urged the current president to take strong action in response to the tensions that have taken place because of allegations of vote malpractices in the country’s current election.

Your Excellency, President Buhari Muhammadu, tension is building up and please let all elections that do not pass the credibility and transparency test be cancelled and be brought back with areas where elections were disrupted for next Saturday, March 4, 2023, and BVAS and Server officials be changed. To know which stations or polling units were manipulated, let a Committee of INEC staff and representatives of the four major political parties with the Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association look into what must be done to have hitch-free elections next Saturday, he said
