Nicki Minaj has taken to social media to slam the present generation of artists, especially African American rappers who align themselves with record labels run by white executives.
The Young Money artist, who unfollowed JT and Ice Spice on Instagram earlier this week, articulated her worries regarding this phenomenon. Minaj drew a comparison to her own label, Heavy On It, expressing her dissatisfaction with the situation.
“Motherf*cker tell somebody they don’t want to sign with Heavy On It,” Minaj said, referencing the reluctance of some artists to join her label. “But then they’ll go and sign with the white peoples. And guess who the white peoples finna call?” she asked, before naming herself.
She further claimed that her upcoming album, Pink Friday 2, will only feature artists signed to Heavy On It. “If your name is not on Pink Friday 2, they’re not a Heavy On It artist,” she added, indicating her intent to spotlight only those she considers worthy.
Her criticisms follow ongoing speculation regarding Minaj’s association with Ice Spice.
Initially, there were assumptions that Ice Spice had joined Heavy On It in 2023; however, it was subsequently verified that she signed with Virgin Records.
Despite the collaborative success of their track “Princess Diana,” underlying tensions have surfaced, highlighted by Minaj’s recent decision to unfollow Ice Spice on Instagram.
Notably, Minaj is signed to Young Money, a label affiliated with Universal Music Group, which is overseen by Lucian Grainge—an aspect that has attracted attention as it reflects the very behaviour she is criticizing.
