Nick Cannon Talks Psychological Impact of Being ‘Mariah’s Man’

Nick Cannon, during his appearance on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast, candidly shared his experience grappling with insecurities throughout his marriage to pop sensation Mariah Carey.

The relationship, which began amid romance rumours in 2008 when Cannon starred in Carey’s “Bye Bye” music video, saw Cannon, a child star turned young adult, enter a whirlwind romance with the illustrious singer who is 11 years his senior.

Their secret marriage shortly after the video’s release and the birth of their twins, Moroccan and Monroe, in 2011, culminated in a divorce announcement in 2014.

Despite their age difference and rapid engagement, Cannon explained to Daniels that societal perceptions and internal stereotypes about “manhood” and gender roles haunted him.

“I got married in my 20s still, to the biggest star in the world. My trajectory was here, and then hers — she’s already in a different stratosphere,” he admitted, reflecting on the pressure he felt being known merely as “Mariah’s man.”

Cannon’s account highlighted his struggle to reconcile his identity with the lavish lifestyle and hierarchical family dynamics that evolved after the birth of their twins.

He humorously recalled his transition into the role of a family man, juxtaposed with Carey’s commanding presence.

“Then when you have children and the hierarchy of man s**t is like ‘Wait, I’m carrying a purse, the diaper bag. I’m standing on the corner waiting,'” Cannon shared.

Despite the opulence and comfort of his marital life, which included waking up at noon to steaks on a platter, Cannon confessed to losing his “hustler” spirit.

His insecurities extended into his professional life, causing him to question whether his roles at Nickelodeon and Island Def Jam were secured through his wife’s connections.

“I was wearing suits every day ’cause I’m trying to prove that I’m a man,” Cannon revealed, emphasizing his struggle with his adolescent psyche while standing next to a powerful woman.

Cannon praised Carey for her understanding and evolution throughout his journey. He acknowledged her unwavering support during his health battles, particularly with Lupus, which further shaped his perspective on life.

His quest for validation and identity saw him grappling with societal expectations, ultimately finding solace in their shared love and commitment to raising a family.

Today, Cannon’s diversified career includes hosting roles on shows like VH1’s “Wild ‘n Out” and Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” contributing to his substantial entertainment empire.

Meanwhile, Mariah Carey remains one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, with an unparalleled record of 19 No. 1 songs, second only to The Beatles.

Cannon’s reflections offer a glimpse into the complexities of fame, love, and identity, shedding light on the modern trend of men grappling with the financial and social dynamics within relationships.
