Shaquil Barrett’s 2-year-old daughter, Arrayah, has died after drowning in a pool at their Florida residence.
The tragic accident purportedly occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, with police reporting that Arrayah fell into the pool. It is believed that paramedics attempted CPR while rushing the child to a local hospital, but NBC News reports that she was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.
“The investigation is ongoing,” authorities said. “It is not believed to be suspicious in nature at this time, but a purely accidental and tragic incident.”
The news has shocked and saddened the athlete’s supporters and the broader community, who have offered condolences and support for the family.
In a statement from his Tampa Bay Buccaneers team, they wrote on Twitter, “Today’s tragic news is heartbreaking for all members of the Buccaneers family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shaq, Jordanna, and the entire Barrett family during this unimaginably difficult time.”
“While no words can provide true comfort at a time such as this,” they continued, “we offer our support and love as they begin to process this very profound loss of their beloved Arrayah.” Tom Brady was one of the many celebrities who sent their condolences to the Barrett family, taking to his Instagram Story and writing, “The Bradys love you.”
Barrett and his wife, Jordanna, who’ve been together since high school, share three other children.
Shaquil has publicly stated the value of prioritising family time, especially during the hectic NFL season. He strives to spend as much time as he can with his children, whether it’s driving them to school or attending their extracurricular activities.
In an interview with The Denver Post, Shaquil revealed that his family is his biggest motivation. He wants to provide for them and give them a better life, which helps drive him to succeed on the field.
