Former President John Dramani Mahama was met with an overwhelming show of support during his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, a political stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
On December 1, 2024, the streets of Kumasi were flooded with thousands of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters for the “Enti Asanteman Aseda Ni” walk, a march aimed at advocating for change and shifting the region’s voting pattern in the upcoming December 7 elections.
The event concluded at Kumasi’s Jubilee Park, where Mahama addressed the crowd, visibly moved by the unprecedented turnout. “Are we in Kumasi? Am I dreaming?” he asked, his voice filled with disbelief. “I don’t know if I am dreaming. Somebody should wake me up.
Is this Kumasi? Is this Asanteman?” His remarks captured the excitement and significance of the moment, highlighting a groundswell of support in a region historically dominated by his political opponents.
Mahama’s visit began with a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, a gesture underscoring the importance of tradition and unity.
Following the electrifying rally at Jubilee Park, the former president continued his campaign with community engagements and mini-durbars in key constituencies, including Offinso North, Offinso South, Atwima Nwabiagya North, and Atwima Mponua.
The massive turnout in the Ashanti Region—a region known for its consistent support for the NPP—has fueled discussions about the potential for a shift in political dynamics.
The NDC’s strategic efforts to break the NPP’s dominance in the region come amid growing concerns about economic challenges, unemployment, and governance issues under the current administration.
