NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama during a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Ghana, pledged to eliminate unnecessary perks such as free fuel and other benefits for government officials if he wins the upcoming presidential election in December.
He highlighted cost-cutting strategies that his administration would adopt, which include ending complimentary DSTV subscriptions, covering utility bills, and providing fuel allowances to officials.
The NDC flagbearer stressed that these privileges are financially draining for the state and should be terminated. He further stated that government officials should shoulder the expenses for these services like any other citizen.
“We will discontinue the payment of utility bills, fuel, DSTV, etc. as conditions of service for top government officials, directors, and the political class. We believe that people should take up paying their own electricity bills and water bills like every other Ghanaian does.
“Unless you are using a government vehicle or on government assignment, you should buy your fuel if you are using your own car. And so we are going to discontinue that.”
