NCA Approves Starlink’s Satellite Broadband Operation In Ghana

Ghana’s telecommunications sector has witnessed a breakthrough as the National Communications Authority (NCA) has approved Space X Starlink GH LTD, the provider of Starlink Satellite Broadband, to offer Satellite Broadband Services in the country.

This significant decision conveyed via an official statement on April 25, represents a crucial milestone after the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation’s support for the Satellite Licensing Framework in Ghana.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has approved the application of Space X Starlink GH LTD, operators of Starlink Satellite Broadband, to offer Satellite Broadband Services in Ghana.

The approval of the application follows the policy approval of the Satellite Licensing Framework in Ghana by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.

The administrative processes towards the issuance of the licence is ongoing and will be completed shortly.

Starlink, a satellite internet constellation, is operated by Starlink Services, LLC, a subsidiary of SpaceX, an American aerospace company.

It covers more than 70 countries and aims to provide global mobile broadband connectivity.

Since 2019, SpaceX has been launching Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO). Currently, over 6,000 mass-produced small satellites in orbit communicate with ground transceivers.

The company plans to deploy around 12,000 satellites initially, with a potential extension to 34,400.

In terms of subscribers, SpaceX announced that it reached over 1 million subscribers in December 2022, followed by 1.5 million subscribers in May 2023, and then 2 million subscribers in September 2023.
