The Minority Leader in Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson, has called for a nationwide investigation into allegations made against President Akufo-Addo in the Al Jazeera “Gold Mafia” documentary.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said the documentary’s allegations threaten the country’s future. In a tweet published on Friday, April 28, 2023, Dr. Ato Forson vowed that his party would not stand by while the environment of Ghana is auctioned off to enrich certain individuals.

Therefore, he demanded a comprehensive investigation into the allegations made by the accused gold smuggler, Alistair Mathias.

The revelation that $40 million worth of gold is smuggled out of Ghana every month is deeply concerning. Al Jazeera’s recent documentary on Africa’s Gold Smuggling mafia has confirmed that the country is being exploited by collaborators who benefit from illegal gold mining and smuggling.Dr. Ato Forson said.

“The active endorsement of these illegal activities by some in officialdom is an affront to the country’s future, and it is unacceptable to trade our environment for the benefit of a few who profit from these illicit trades. It is high time for a national investigation into these matters.” he added.

An alleged friend and lawyer of President Akufo-Addo is the gold merchant who was the subject of Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia investigative documentary. According to the latest news on the Gold Mafia investigation by Al Jazeera, a group of criminals in South Africa are responsible for billions of dollars’ worth of gold smuggling and money laundering.

Despite this, the members of this gold smuggling organisation have wide business connections across Africa and are active in numerous other nations, including Ghana. The undercover journalists pretended to be Chinese criminals and wanted Alistair Mathias, whom they characterised as a financial architect who constructs money laundering plans for corrupt politicians.

While negotiating with the undercover reporters, he said President Akufo-Addo was his friend and lawyer. Alistair had previously admitted to smuggling $40 million worth of gold from Ghana every month, which is $480 million worth of gold every year.
