Singer Mzbel has brought a new perspective to the discussion surrounding a Dutch passport versus a PhD obtained from Ghana.
She mentioned that despite having the option to give birth to her children in any European country, she deliberately chose Ghana.
During an interview on Wontumi TV, she criticized celebrities who go to great lengths to give birth in developed countries like the US and Canada solely to secure citizenship for their children.
Mzbel expressed her disappointment in the trend and stated that she finds it embarrassing when celebrities take pride in obtaining foreign citizenship for their kids.
“People were asking why I did not give birth abroad, but I felt shy to do so. Having Ghanaian blood, why would I stay abroad to give birth just for some opportunities?
“I won’t do it because I don’t want my children to believe one must travel abroad to succeed. It’s a common practice, but I’m embarrassed by it,” Mzbel said.
This ongoing debate about the value of a Dutch passport juxtaposed with a PhD degree obtained from Ghana was initiated by Kofi Gabs aka Mr Happiness, a prominent Ghanaian social media personality residing in the Netherlands.
Gabs, who recently became a Dutch citizen and received a passport, argued that his Dutch citizenship holds more practical value than a PhD from Ghana.
He shared his personal experience of obtaining a visa to visit a friend in the United States through the ESTA app, highlighting the ease and efficiency with which he received approval due to his Dutch citizenship.
Gabs firmly believes that the tangible benefits of holding a Dutch passport outweigh the prestige associated with obtaining a PhD in Ghana.
