Media personality Abena Moet has showered praise on veteran Ghanaian musician Mzbel, crediting her for paving the way for female artistes like Ebony, S3fa, and Wendy Shay.
According to Abena, Mzbel’s boldness and style challenged norms and laid the foundation for the confidence and creativity seen in today’s music industry.
“Mzbel crawled so artists like Ebony, S3fa, and Wendy Shay could walk,” Abena Moet said during a recent discussion. “She went through a lot in this industry. She brought the whole ‘Diva’ vibe to the industry.”
Abena reflected on Mzbel’s groundbreaking music videos, particularly the controversies surrounding her outfits, which at the time were considered highly provocative. She noted, however, that by today’s standards, those outfits would hardly raise an eyebrow.

“The outfit she wore in the video, which caused so much controversy—if you look at it now, it wasn’t really provocative. What we saw as so much, it wasn’t all that. But it was a big deal then,” she explained.
Mzbel’s career in the early 2000s was marked by both acclaim and criticism, as she faced public scrutiny for her bold fashion choices and lyrics.
Yet, it’s this fearlessness that Abena believes has helped normalize creative expression among female artistes today.
“Now, she’s the reason why a lot of things we see our female artistes doing have been normalized,” Abena added, highlighting how Mzbel’s resilience in the face of societal backlash helped shift perceptions and open doors for the next generation.
Mzbel, known for hits like 16 Years and Awoso Me, remains an influential figure in Ghana’s music history. Her unapologetic approach to her art set a precedent for female empowerment in the industry.
