In a recent interview with Amansan Krakye, renowned reggae and dancehall artist Iwan Suhyini offered valuable advice to fellow musicians: learn to produce your own music and design your own album artwork.
Speaking from experience, Iwan emphasized the importance of self-reliance, especially for independent artists who do not have the support of a record label.

“I’ve been producing my songs since the mid-90s,” Iwan shared, highlighting his long-standing expertise in the industry. “Even some of the artwork for my songs, I personally design them.”
According to Iwan, acquiring production skills can significantly reduce costs and increase creative control for artists. However, Iwan was quick to caution that not everyone has a natural talent for producing. “If you don’t have the talent to produce your own beats, don’t force yourself,” he advised, suggesting instead to hire professional producers.
“It’s great to know how to play your own beats and do your own production as an artist, but if you don’t have the talent, don’t force yourself.” Iwan also pointed out the financial benefits of being self-sufficient in production. “It helps to reduce certain costs because, for some tracks which are not major, you don’t need to invest much.
“You can explore and experiment with those, but for major tracks, you can rent the service of a professional producer,” he explained. This isn’t the first time a major artist has highlighted the importance of self-production.
