In a recent speech that resonated with both aspiring and established artists, rapper Maradona Yeboah Adjei, the President of the University of Ghana (UG) Students Representative Council (SRC), highlighted an often-overlooked aspect of the music industry: the depth and potential of musicians beyond their on-stage personas.

“The narrative was always that as for musicians, yours is about performing on stage with lights and sound to make people dance through the songs we do,” Guru told Amansan Krakye on Property FM, emphasizing that music is more than just entertainment; it’s a powerful tool for change and a medium for ideas.
For many, the life of a musician is glamorized and painted as a continuous cycle of concerts, parties, and celebrations. Yet, beneath the surface lies a community of individuals brimming with aspirations, knowledge, and visions for the future.
Professionally known as Guru, the former serial hitmaker pointed out that “most people didn’t know that we musicians don’t only do music for people to dance but we do have ideas about a lot of things,” and it’s this breadth of thought that should be harnessed to pave the way for future generations.
Adjei’s call to action encourages artists not to confine themselves to their natural talents. “There’s no limit to what we can do,” he asserted, urging musicians to pursue education alongside their artistic endeavours.
This message is particularly significant in a country where the arts often compete for attention against more traditional career paths.
By advocating for education, Adjei aims to inspire a new wave of musicians who can leverage their creativity alongside academic qualifications, enriching their artistry and expanding their opportunities.

His own journey serves as a motivating example. As the UG SRC President, Adjei has not only excelled in his studies but has also made a mark in the music industry.
“Let my victory as the UG SRC be your biggest motivation,” he shared, illustrating that success is attainable when one combines passion with perseverance and education.
The narrative around musicians must evolve to reflect the multifaceted roles they can play in society.
