In a candid conversation with Class TV, Ghanaian music legend and “Grandpapa of Hiplife,” Reggie Rockstone, delved into the origins of monogamy and its place in African society.
The Hiplife veteran did not shy from sharing his opinion on the subject, describing monogamy as a concept “imposed” on African cultures through Western influence.
“I know it’s not African; I could tell you that for sure,” Reggie asserted with conviction. “It doesn’t seem to apply to us.
“We’ve been so Christianised and Westernised now. But I really believe that it doesn’t really move with our culture. I mean, it was imposed on us.”

His comments open the door to a wider conversation about the intersection of tradition, religion, and modern relationships in Africa.
Historically, many African societies practiced polygamy as part of their cultural framework. However, with the arrival of European colonial powers and the spread of Christianity, societal norms shifted dramatically.
Reflecting on his own relationship values, Reggie clarified that his commitment to monogamy is a personal choice rather than one tied to imposed standards.
“The reason why I’m a one-woman man is my personality,” he said with a smile. “You know, it’s too much headache for me. I like my peace of mind.”
