Michelle Obama: “I Couldn’t Stand My Husband For The First Decade Of Our Marriage”

Michelle and Barack Obama have talked for years about their hard period, when she was parenting their kids more than him, but she’s never been this direct, stating that she “couldn’t stand” the ex-President for a third of their marriage.

She made this revelation in a ‘Revolt TV interview, published on December 15, where the former first lady discussed the difficulties of having a family and maintaining a job.

“People think I’m being catty saying this: It’s like, there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband. And guess when it happened? When those kids were little.”

She has previously discussed Barack Obama’s frequent absences as a state lawmaker travelling from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois. During the conversation, she stated, “and for 10 years while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even.”

Michelle discussed the importance of perseverance in a marriage and how some people give up too quickly, “… guess what: 10 years — we’ve been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30 — it’s just how you look at it. And people give up … five years, I can’t take it.”

In addition, there was some tepid commendation, “…do you like him? I mean you could be mad at him but do you still look at him and go, ‘I’m not happy with you, but I respect you. I don’t agree with you but you’re still a kind, smart person.

The REVOLT TV show dubbed ‘A Cross-Generational Discussion’ featured the former First Lady Michelle Obama and an influential panel of powerful women of colour including recording artists H.E.R and Kelly Rowland, supermodel-activist Winnie Harlow, businesswoman Tina Knowles-Lawson, and moderated by radio host Angie Martinez.
