The female mayor of Cotija, Mexico, Yolanda Sánchez has been shot dead by unknown gunmen shortly after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as the nation’s first female president.
Sánchez, who had been in office since September 2021, was ambushed and shot 19 times on Monday, along with her bodyguard.
Despite receiving death threats, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack, though it is believed that the gunmen were part of an organized crime group.
The violence against politicians has cast a shadow over Mexico’s recent election, where two women vied for the presidency.
The upcoming presidency of Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1, follows the tenure of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known for his social welfare programs.
Mexico continues to grapple with high levels of violence, particularly against women, with an average of 10 women being murdered daily. Additionally, over 100,000 people are currently missing in the country.
