John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has promised that if re-elected, his administration will end the practise of providing ex gratia payments to former government officials and ministers.

The National Democratic Congress, an opposition party, just selected John Dramani Mahama, a former president, as its candidate for the presidential election in 2024. The election held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, resulted in an overwhelming win for the former president, who received 297,603 votes (98.9%) to Kojo Bonsu’s 3,181 votes (1.1%).

This was part of his acceptance speech after he was selected as the NDC’s presidential candidate.

“I am committed to operating an effective government with no more than sixty ministers. These ministers, together with other appointees of the government, will not be entitled to ex-gratia payment after their tenure, as I will make them commit to that undertaking even before the necessary constitutional amendment, including a review of the controversial Article 71, is carried out,” he said.

Brief History Of John Dramani Mahama

Mahama has experience in the fields of communication, history, and writing. He was the Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi for the NDC from 1997 to 2009, and he was also the Deputy Minister for Communication from 1997 to 1998 and the Minister for Communications from 1998 until 2009.

The death of John Evans Atta Mills made Dramani the first vice president to become president. He was elected President full-time after the election in December 2012. In 2016, he ran for re-election but was defeated by Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party. This made him the first president in Ghana’s history to be defeated for a second term.
