During a media interaction today, January 2, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama shed light on his government’s decision to scrap the Ministry of Information from its newly announced line-up of 23 ministries.
The move, he explained, was part of a broader strategy to downsize government, while also ensuring that information flow remained a priority in his administration.
“With regards to government communications, you would notice that there is no Ministry of Information in the line-up of 23 ministries that we recently announced,” Mahama began, addressing concerns over the absence of the traditional ministry.

“That was partly in response to our promise to downsize government,” he clarified.
However, the President emphasized that the decision to eliminate the Ministry of Information was not about reducing communication efforts but about being more strategic in how information is managed and shared.
“But then it also meant that we had to be very strategic with the way we dealt with the flow of information from the government because that is critical to the success of whatever we intend to do,” Mahama said, underlining the importance of effective communication in governance.
Rather than a complete reduction in communication efforts, the President explained that his government’s approach had been restructured.
“The structure we took was to bring information into the presidency, and that is how come we have a Minister of State in charge of government communication,” he said.
This restructuring aims to create a more focused, efficient communication system that integrates information management directly with the highest levels of government.
