President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to terminate the employment of public sector workers hired after December 7, 2024, has sparked controversy, with the Majority in Parliament strongly opposing the move.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized the dismissals, arguing that they unfairly target Ghanaians who secured legitimate employment.
Speaking in Parliament while seconding the motion to adjourn the house following Mahama’s State of the Nation Address, the Effutu MP expressed concern over what he described as a troubling pattern of dismissals within the President’s first 100 days in office.

“In his administration in less than 100 days, all we know is sack them, dismissal. Mr. Speaker, on the streets of Accra today, the youth are saying Mahama baako, termination bebree,” Afenyo-Markin remarked, highlighting growing frustration among young people affected by the job cuts.
The dismissals, carried out under the directive of the Chief of Staff, have left many questioning the government’s approach to employment stability, especially at a time when the economy is struggling to recover.
While government officials argue that the move is necessary to rectify last-minute appointments by the previous administration, critics believe it unfairly punishes hardworking citizens who had no role in the political transition.
