M.anifest Condemns Detention of Protesters, Calls for Urgent Change Amid Anti-Galamsey Crisis

M.anifest has shared his deep concern over the detention of protesters fighting against illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey as he addressed the ongoing environmental crisis in Ghana.

Taking to X, M.anifest expressed frustration with the government’s harsh response to peaceful demonstrators and the growing apathy among fellow Ghanaians.

“It’s actually very alarming that you can be held without bail for exercising your right to protest,” M.anifest tweeted, alluding to the 53 Democracy Hub activists who were arrested during a recent anti-galamsey demonstration.

“Even more concerning is your fellow Ghanaians agreeing with this blatant punitive measure under the guise of ‘law & order.’ E be your own people… until one day e reach dem.”

His comments underscore a broader sentiment of disillusionment with the country’s leadership and legal system. M.anifest’s tweet not only criticizes the detention but also calls attention to the complicity of everyday Ghanaians who, according to him, are too willing to overlook the government’s authoritarian measures in the name of maintaining order.

In the same series of tweets, M.anifest posed a crucial question that has lingered in the minds of many Ghanaians: “What will it take for real change to happen in this country?”

His call for meaningful reform reflects the frustrations of a large portion of the population, who feel that the government’s efforts to address pressing issues like environmental degradation are either insufficient or non-existent.

His reference to “those poisoning the waters, literally and figuratively,” is a direct critique of those responsible for enabling and profiting from galamsey.

It also highlights the broader metaphorical “poisoning” of Ghana’s political and social systems, which many believe have been eroded by corruption and self-interest.

“Love to everyone on the frontlines and everyone amplifying,” M.anifest added, in a show of solidarity with protesters who are standing up against galamsey and the destructive forces at play. “And to those poisoning the waters, literally and figuratively, posterity will have its say.”

The protest M.anifest is backing began after activists called for an end to galamsey and demanded the immediate release of the arrested protesters.

It has since grown into a larger movement, with demonstrators calling on the government to take stronger actions against illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources.

The three-day protest, set to run until October 5, is a testament to the growing urgency of addressing environmental destruction.
