Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, a group of 17 Republican Louisiana lawmakers have called for more “family-friendly” halftime shows, criticising past performances by Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez as “lewd” and “offensive.”
In a letter sent earlier this month to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Louisiana Stadium and Expo District, the legislators argued that taxpayers should have a say in the content of the Super Bowl halftime show, given the state’s financial contribution to the event. The letter cited past performances by Rihanna (2023), Jennifer Lopez (2020), and Janet Jackson (2004) as examples of “vulgar” displays that are inappropriate for viewing by children.

Jennifer Lopez’s performance, which included wearing minimal clothing and being groped by dancers, drew particular ire from the lawmakers. Rihanna’s performance, which featured her “groping herself” while singing lyrics deemed offensive, was also criticised.

The lawmakers emphasised that such performances objectify women and are not welcomed by the majority of Louisiana parents. They requested that future contracts for the use of facilities funded by Louisiana taxpayers include provisions ensuring performers adhere to the state’s community decency standards.
While the letter did not specifically call out this year’s halftime performer, Kendrick Lamar, it urged organisers to ensure the event is as family-friendly as possible. Lamar will be joined by SZA for the halftime show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025.
