Lizzy Anjorin Exonerated: Police Investigation Reveals Market Incident Was a Misunderstanding

Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal has been cleared of gold theft allegations that recently circulated following a public confrontation at the Oba Akintoye Market on Lagos Island.

A video surfaced on social media, showing traders accusing the actress of stealing a piece of gold, which quickly sparked outrage and debate online. However, the Lagos State Police Command has since confirmed that these claims were based on a misunderstanding, and no theft was committed.

In an interview with The Punch, the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that after a thorough investigation, it became evident that the situation was a “mistake of facts.”

The video that fueled the allegations lacked credibility, as the accusations were not supported by any substantial evidence.

The incident occurred during what seemed to be a routine shopping trip for Anjorin at the market, where confusion erupted over a piece of jewelry. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with some traders mistakenly identifying the actress as the person involved in the mix-up.

In the bustling environment, emotions ran high, and the situation escalated quickly, leading to the viral accusations. Many onlookers were quick to jump to conclusions, feeding into the narrative that the actress was guilty.

Lizzy Anjorin, determined to clear her name, reported the matter to the police, maintaining her innocence throughout the ordeal.

The police investigation brought clarity, revealing that the entire situation had been blown out of proportion.

SP Hundeyin stressed that misunderstandings like these are common in crowded markets, where a simple miscommunication can easily lead to exaggerated claims.

Following the police’s findings, Lizzy Anjorin expressed her relief and thanked the authorities for their swift action in resolving the matter.

Commenting on the issue, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said;

“There was no case of stealing to start with. Our investigation revealed that the seller of the goods gave the wrong account number.

“Out of the 10 digits the person was to provide, one digit was given wrongly and our investigation revealed that Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal did the transfer to the wrong account number.

“But when it turned out that it was a mistake of facts and that they called her a thief in error, Lizzy (Anjorin-Lawal) took the assault meted out against her up and after the suspects were arrested and the case had gone to court, for reasons best known to her, she said she was no longer interested in the case and the case was withdrawn.”

Speaking further, Hundeyin said the people who accused Anjorin-Lawal of stealing, while writing their statements at the police station, confirmed that they were the ones who made the mistake, as it was the seller that gave her the wrong account details.

“Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal transferred what she was supposed to transfer, which was about N90,000, into the wrong account that she was given and there was a receipt; when it was becoming too hot, she again transferred money to the correct account number they gave her.

“So, she did a double transfer just to avoid trouble, even though the mistake was not hers. So, I am confirming that the police investigation revealed that there was no stealing.

“Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal was not culpable of stealing as she did not engage in stealing according to our investigation” he said.
