Abena Osei Asare, the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, has strongly criticized the establishment of President-elect John Mahama’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee, calling it both “unlawful and unconstitutional.”
Speaking during a thank-you tour in her constituency in the Eastern Region, the MP, who also serves as Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, questioned the necessity of the newly formed five-member committee chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

“Why create a new committee when we already have state agencies mandated to handle corruption-related issues?” she asked pointedly.
“This committee lacks legal backing, and its findings will have no enforceable impact. What exactly does the NDC government hope to achieve with this?”
The ORAL Committee was introduced as part of President-elect Mahama’s agenda to recover allegedly looted state funds, a move his supporters view as critical to combating corruption and restoring accountability.
However, critics like Abena Osei Asare see it as a duplication of efforts, potentially undermining existing constitutional bodies like the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Auditor-General’s Department.

“The constitution provides clear guidelines for tackling corruption. Let’s not set up unnecessary parallel structures that undermine our existing institutions,” she emphasized, pointing to the risks of sidelining well-established agencies in favour of committees that may lack institutional depth or objectivity.
