Leaked Tape: If Not For The Respect I’ve For Akufo-Addo, I Wouldn’t Have Honoured This Invitation- Dampare

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare has stated without mincing words that if not for the respect he has for President Nana Akufo-Addo, he wouldn’t have honoured the invitation extended to him to appear before the parliamentary committee investigating what is known as the IGP leaked tape.

He said that if it weren’t for the respect he has for himself, his wife and children in particular, and the police administration, who showed up in large numbers to show support him, he wouldn’t have accepted the invitation. Additionally, he noted the difficult state of affairs that followed certain senior police officers’ claims at meetings of the special parliamentary investigative committee.

“This is just not fair,” the IGP broke down in pain as he took his turn on Tuesday, September 12, to give testimony.

“They made wild allegations against me without a shred of evidence. Those allegations have brought pain to me, my family and to my command. Anyway, I am here. I have no choice. I have no choice and I have come.”

He indicated that he would not have honoured the invitation but for the respect he has for himself, his family, his wife and children in particular, and the police administration, who came in their numbers to offer solidarity.

“And for the respect I have for the institutions of state. . .and more importantly the respect I have for the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

Initially, his attorneys objected to the other police witnesses’ attendance who had previously given testimony before the committee. However, Samuel Atta Akyea, the committee chairman, rejected that decision to allow the proceedings to continue.
