Colonel (rtd) Festus Aboagye has expressed his reservations regarding the leadership approach of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
However, he has emphasized that such disagreements should not lead to calls for the IGP’s termination or branding him as the worst in history. Drawing from his experience in the military, he noted that officers may encounter commanders whose leadership styles they do not necessarily agree with, yet they still operate under their authority.
“I might have my disagreements with the IGP around questions of his style, not that the IGP is corrupt,” he mentioned.
“He has not embezzled police funds, he has not misapplied the resources that have been given to him. It is all about very little things like welfare and whatever it is,” Col Aboagye pointed out.
During an appearance on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, the topic of discussion was the testimony given by two senior police officers before a seven-member ad-hoc committee investigating a leaked audio recording involving the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The recording, which the two officers claim was doctored, captured their voices along with that of former Northern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu, allegedly plotting to remove the current IGP.
The officers, a Commissioner of Police and a Superintendent expressed concerns about the leadership style of IGP Dampare, citing despondency within the rank and file of the Ghana Police Service.
However, retired Colonel Aboagye stated that the issues raised by the officers do not justify the removal of the IGP.
