The recent passing of Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has cast a spotlight on the challenges facing Ghana’s healthcare system.
The death of the vibrant and outspoken political figure has not only left a void in Ghanaian politics but also sparked a critical conversation about the state of medical infrastructure in the country.
In a heartfelt discussion on Accra FM, radio personality Nana Romeo lamented that Akua Donkor’s death might have been preventable with better healthcare facilities.
Nana Romeo highlighted the difficulties faced during the transfer of Akua Donkor from Nsawam Hospital to Ridge Hospital in Accra.

“If Nsawam Hospital had an ICU, Akua Donkor might still be with us. Imagine the distance from Nsawam to Ridge for a patient with breathing issues.
“The roads are under construction, slowing down the ambulance. Traffic is an added challenge, preventing the speed needed in an emergency like this,” he stated.
The distance between Nsawam and Ridge is approximately 38.5 kilometers, a journey that could be manageable under ideal conditions but becomes perilous when faced with roadworks and heavy traffic.
Akua Donkor’s struggle for survival underscores the critical need for well-equipped Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in regional hospitals.
An ICU could have provided the immediate, specialized care she needed, potentially stabilizing her condition and saving her life.
The absence of such facilities in Nsawam highlights a broader issue within the healthcare system—limited access to critical care in many parts of the country.
Akua Donkor was a significant figure in Ghanaian politics, known for her advocacy for farmers and women’s rights.
As the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, she was a trailblazer, often drawing public attention with her bold and unfiltered approach to addressing the needs of grassroots communities.
Her unexpected death has left many questioning what could have been done differently. The situation faced by Akua Donkor is not unique.
Many Ghanaians in rural areas encounter similar struggles when they need urgent medical attention.
The lack of advanced medical facilities forces patients to travel long distances to receive the care they need, often resulting in delayed treatment and, in tragic cases, preventable deaths.
Nana Romeo’s comments have sparked a broader conversation about the urgent need for healthcare reform in Ghana.

He pointed out the pressing necessity for infrastructural improvements, particularly the establishment of ICUs in hospitals across the country.
“It’s not just about having hospitals; it’s about having fully equipped hospitals that can handle emergencies,” he emphasized.
