Kwahu Easter: Ghana AIDS Commission To Distribute Free Condoms

The Ghana AIDS Commission plans to give away free condoms to Easter revellers this year due to the high amount of promiscuity that goes along with the holiday in Kwahu.

In Ghana, there are currently 354,927 individuals living with HIV, with an estimated 16,574 new HIV infections in 2022.

Over the years, the Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission and the National AIDS Control Programme, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, has made significant strides in strengthening the HIV response.

Dr. Steve Kyeremeh Atuahene, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, emphasized the importance of distributing free condoms and offering free HIV testing to help prevent the spread of HIV.

The Commission, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, provides services and assistance to those visiting Kwahu for the Easter festivities.

“Events such as the Kwahu Easter festival is a hot spot for HIV transmission and so the commission collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism and we have since been running HIV programmes since Kwahu Easter every year.

So every year, we set up screening and condom distribution centres in all the three districts within the Kwahu enclave, and at these centres we provide counselling and testing for HIV and other diseases and we also give out free condoms so that those who have romance on their minds should also think of protection,” Dr. Steve Kyeremeh Atuahene said.
