YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon has criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding a significant scandal that emerged following the African Games held in Ghana a few months ago.
Despite his close ties to the NPP, Kwadwo Sheldon has demanded accountability in light of allegations that the government allocated $18 million, roughly GH₵281 million, for food during the African Games.
While appearing on Kingdom FM, where he has been providing punditry works alongside Fiifi Praat, Kwadwo Sheldon converted the $18 million into cedis to highlight the magnitude of the corruption.
He, along with other guests in the studio, is advocating for an investigation into the issue and for those involved in the scandal to be held accountable.
Background
This development comes on the back of the disclosure made by Kobena Woyome, the Ranking Member of the Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee in Parliament, that Ghana allocated $15 million solely for athletes’ food during the 2024 African Games.
According to a report submitted to the parliamentary committee, this huge expenditure occurred over just 18 days.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Woyome stated that the committee is seeking additional information regarding the financial outlay for the games and plans to initiate a thorough investigation.
“You are spending $245 million and out of that, we got to know that a whopping amount of $15 million was used to feed athletes for 18 days,” he said.
“You realise that some of these things needed to be investigated. We wanted to know how many athletes actually made it. How many got registered?
In fact, we need to get a report from the games management system because the system must be able to tell us. How many actually game and participated in the Games. All these details we would want to know.”
