Prophet Kumchacha has formed his own political party as he prepares to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.
The popular clergyman, known for his outspoken criticism of the current government regarding various policies and shortcomings that have led to the nation’s economic difficulties, stated in an interview with TV3 that he aims to introduce practical solutions to address Ghana’s challenges.
He announced that his party would be called the Kum People’s Party (KPP).
He also stated that while he might lack the formal education typically seen in candidates from the two dominant political parties, the NPP and NDC, he is confident in his ability to lead the country.
He highlighted that being proficient in English is not essential for successful governance.
“It’s official, I am going independent under the party; KPP (Kum Peoples Party). Someone asked why I was running for president when my command of the English language wasn’t that great.
“But if you look into the constitution, the 3 major requirements to run for president include not being less than 40 years old, not having a criminal record and being of sound mind.
“Look at China with a population of more than 1 billion, they don’t speak English, they speak in their local dialect, but even those who speak good English go there for loans. So it’s not about the English language,” he said.
If elected, he has committed to addressing the persistent issue of high rents that has affected many Ghanaians, vowing to enhance the affordability of housing.
Additionally, he has pledged to reform the criminal justice system by shortening prison sentences for minor offences and providing employment opportunities for offenders on government-funded farms.
“A lot of emergencies can happen. So if you are being forced to pay 40, 000 in rent, how much would be left for other expenses? Another would be the criminal justice system, people are being jailed for decades for petty crimes like theft. Instead of locking them up, I will employ them in state farms,” he added.
