King Promise's Biography

Gregory Bortey Newman, born August 16, 1995, known professionally as King Promise, is a musician and songwriter. He was born to Francis Newman and Angela Quaye.

He is from Nungua, a suburb in Accra, Ghana. King Promise attended the De Kings academy, Nungua Senior High School, and Central University, where he matriculated in 2016.

Music Career

His debut single, “Thank God,” was released in 2016 under YB Records, featured Fuse ODG, and was produced by Killbeatz. However, it was the 2017 release of “Oh Yeah” that propelled him to prominence after he signed onto Killbeatz record label Legacy Life Entertainment. Gervin Ohene Addo manages the record label.

In November 2017, he came back with another banger titled “Selfish.” The song debuted at number one on the Ghanaian charts for several weeks.

Then in 2018, he dropped three hit singles back-to-back: “CCTV,” which features Sarkodie, “Abena,” and “Tokyo,” featuring Wizkid.

In July 2019, He released his first album, “As Promised,” under exclusive licence to emPawa Africa Limited.

He won a number of awards, including best male vocalist of the year at the Ghana Music Awards UK in 2018. He won Highlife Song of the Year at the 2019 edition of the 3Music Awards.

His second album, “5 Star,” was released in July 2022, following a number of hit singles, including “Slow Down,” “Ring My Line,” featuring Headie One, and “Choplife,” featuring Patoranking. The album won Album of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2023.

Controversies & Rumors

In 2018, Yasmin Behzadi, the woman behind Sarkodie’s Sark collections and the owner of YB Records, stated that her investment in King Promise’s talent contributed to his rise to prominence. She alleges that King Promise has since left her and is now managed by a new management team.

King Promise is rumoured to be dating Nana Aba Anamoah’s Protegee, Serwaa Amihere, a Ghanaian broadcaster.
