May 6th marks a pivotal moment in British history. Buckingham Palace announced that the King, 74, invited over 850 community and charity representatives to his historic crowning ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
Over 450 recipients of the British Empire Medal (BEM) were invited to observe the service from the ancient Abbey itself. Over 400 young people, including representatives of charities designated by King Charles and Queen Camilla, will observe the festivities from Westminster Abbey’s St. Margaret’s Church.
Hundreds of young people will witness the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla from St. Margret’s Church, in what the palace described as a “special private viewing,” and then observe the coronation procession leave Westminster Abbey after the service. 200 members of The Prince’s Trust, The Prince’s Foundation, Barnardo’s, The National Literacy Trust, and Ebony Equestrian Club are included in the group. The King and Queen Consort have nominated the five causes for the opportunity due to their longstanding support for them.
The remaining 200 invited youth are affiliated with the Scout Association, Girlguiding UK, St. John Ambulance, and the National Citizen Service. On May 6, the four organisations nominated by the United Kingdom government for their contributions to coronation day will be responsible for stewarding, route-lining, and first aid throughout London.
“Charles became King Charles the moment his mother died, but the coronation is to do with the job and being the monarch in the eyes of all the people,” royal historian Robert Lacey told PEOPLE.
The extensive guest list signals King Charles III’s drive towards inclusivity as he strives to ensure this time-honoured event fully represents the nation it serves.
With Queen Elizabeth II’s reign coming to an end, this coronation will set forth a new chapter in Britain’s narrative. The act of inviting community and charity leaders to the King’s consecration serves as a constructive measure in fortifying the monarchy’s ties with the British populace.
