Kesha Announces Permanent Lyric Change to “TikTok” Amidst Controversy Surrounding P. Diddy

Kesha, the pop sensation who skyrocketed to fame with her debut single “TikTok” in 2009, has announced that she is changing the song’s iconic opening line, which references rapper P. Diddy.

The decision comes in the wake of multiple civil lawsuits filed against Diddy, accusing him of sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and rape—allegations the rapper has strongly denied.

The original lyrics, “Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy,” will now be replaced by “Wake up in the morning like f**k P Diddy” during live performances. Kesha first unveiled this altered version at Coachella in March 2024, where she joined Reneé Rapp on stage.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kesha reflected on the journey of “TikTok,” her very first single to gain global recognition. “TiK ToK was the first single that I put into this world that had my voice AND my name credited!!!!” she wrote. She expressed pride in how the song still resonates with her and fans alike, embodying the emotions of fun and happiness she initially intended.

“What I’m so proud of is that’s how this song STILL makes me feel, through it all, and those are emotions I want all of us to connect to,” she continued. Kesha acknowledged the changes both in her personal growth and in the world, emphasizing that the updated lyric reflects her current perspective.

Kesha confirmed that the lyric change is permanent and intends to re-record “TikTok” with the new line once she secures the legal rights to do so. “I absolutely love the new lyric change. (Shout out to @reneerapp) Yes, it is permanent,” she added, noting that the song now stands for “fiercely protecting fun and unadulterated joy.”

As “TikTok” marks its 15th anniversary, Kesha reflected on the impact the song has had on her life and the lives of her fans. “I hope you all can find 3 1/2 minutes of play in this song and connect with your wild child-like joy,” she wrote. “Thank you for making my life so magical animals, it’s one for the books!”
