Ken Page, the acclaimed Broadway actor best known for voicing Oogie Boogie in Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, passed away on September 30 at the age of 70. His friend Dorian Hannaway shared the news on social media, stating that Page “passed quietly and peacefully at his home”.
Born on January 20, 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri, Page was passionate about theater from a young age, receiving a full scholarship in musical theater at Fontbonne College.
He began his professional career in the chorus at St. Louis’ Muny theater and made his Broadway debut in 1977 with a role in Cats, where he played the Lion.
Page gained significant recognition in the 1976 Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls, and his role as Old Deuteronomy in Cats would become iconic.
He reprised this role in the 1998 direct-to-video version of Cats and continued to perform in various Broadway productions, including a revival of Ain’t Misbehavin’.
In addition to his stage work, Page had a successful career in film and television.
He appeared as the clever drag queen Murray in the 1988 film Torch Song Trilogy and had a role in the acclaimed musical Dreamgirls.
