Ken Ofori-Atta Bemoans Impact Of 30% Base Pay Increase On 2023 Budget

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, seems to suggest that government reluctantly agreed to increase the base pay for public sector workers.

The government agreed to a 30% increase after negotiations with organized labour. The new payment is expected to take effect from January 1, 2023.

But the Finance Minister is already worried about the impact the increase will have on the government’s 2023 budget, although he believes it is necessary.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta said although the increment will have a massive toll on the budget, government is committed to a peaceful labour front.

“This is going to take a toll on the budget, but I am confident that with enhanced productivity and the commitment that we have given to each other, it will ensure that there is peace in this country as we look at pension and labour issues.”

The Executive Secretary of Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, promised the support of organized labour to help government increase its revenue.

Organized Labour had earlier demanded a 60% increment to make up for the difficult economic conditions.
