Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame and Majority Leader in Parliament, recognizes the remarkable performance of Kennedy Agyapong in the recently concluded New Patriotic Party (NPP) elections.

This outcome, in his view signifies that Vice President Bawumia will need to exert additional efforts in the upcoming 2024 elections. The unexpected number of votes garnered by Kennedy Agyapong serves as a clear indication that the party must strive harder to secure victory and surpass the eight-year tenure.

“I was thinking that we would be able to rake in many more votes than we’ve had. All that means is that we need to work harder,” he said.

He continued, “I thought he would not be able to get 20%. In the worst-case scenario, I was looking at 25% for him, but to have scaled 25 and get to 40 is some performance. We all know Suame was one of his target constituencies.

Certified results released by Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Serebour Quaicoe, unveiled that Dr Bawumia secured 118,210 votes, accounting for 61.47% of the total, while his closest rival Mr Agyapong garnered 71,996 votes, representing 37.41%.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who finished in a distant third place, received 1,459 votes, equivalent to 0.76%, while Addai-Nimoh managed to gather a mere 731 votes, representing 0.41%. A total of 192,446 delegates participated in the presidential primary held on Saturday.

Out of the total votes cast, 193,346 were deemed valid, with 900 votes being rejected. The overall turnout was recorded at 94.63%. Although Bawumia was initially projected to emerge victorious in the presidential primary, he fell short of the 80% target set by his campaign team.
