Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is back on the screen with a new project from HBO, a dark comedy series titled “The Regime”.
The series, which premieres on March 3, 2024, follows the chancellor of a fictional Central European autocracy, who finds her position threatened by domestic turmoil and international pressure.
Winslet plays the chancellor, a ruthless and charismatic leader who rules her country with an iron fist. She is infatuated with a butcher, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who becomes her unlikely confidant and lover. She also has to deal with her husband, played by Guillaume Gallienne, who is more interested in his hobbies than in politics. Her right-hand woman and chief minister is the palace manager, played by Andrea Riseborough, who tries to keep the chancellor’s affairs in order and her secrets hidden.
The series is a political satire that mocks the absurdities and hypocrisies of authoritarian regimes and their leaders. It also explores the themes of power, corruption, love, and loyalty. The series was created by Will Tracy, a former editor-in-chief of The Onion and a writer for Succession. The series is directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, who have both worked on acclaimed shows such as The Crown and A Very English Scandal. The series also features Martha Plimpton as the U.S. secretary of state, who seeks to protect American interests in the country, and Hugh Grant as the leader of the opposition, whose imprisonment triggers large-scale public protests.
The series consists of six episodes, each one hour long. The series is produced by HBO in collaboration with SAF Films West and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The trailer, which was released on February 7, 2024, shows Winslet’s chancellor proposing an invasion of “peace and love” to her cabinet, while also engaging in a passionate affair with Schoenaerts’ butcher. You can watch the trailer below!
