The upcoming film “The American Society of Magical Negroes” features Justice Smith as Aren, a young man who is recruited into a secret society of magical black people dedicated to making white people’s lives easier.
The movie, directed by Kobi Libii, is a whimsical and satirical coming-of-age tale that promises to take a satirical look at society and race. The plot revolves around Aren’s recruitment into the secret society after experiencing a series of racial microaggressions that lead to an offer to become a Magical Negro himself.
The film is set to premiere at the 40th Sundance Film Festival and will be released in theatres on March 22, 2024. The trailer has already sparked discussions about its deconstruction of racist stereotypes and the “magical negro” trope.
The movie also stars David Alan Grier, An-Li Bogan, Drew Tarver, Michaela Watkins, and Aisha Hinds. The 104-minute comedy is expected to offer a heartfelt coming-of-age story while addressing sensitive and thought-provoking themes.
