Jean Mensa is Not In Ghana: EC Replies Minority For Saying EC Chairperson Disrespected Parliament

Tru News Report recalls that a few days ago, the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, has been accused of disrespect by the Minority in Parliament for failing to personally address the House about the planned Constitutional Instrument (CI) by the EC.

The proposed CI by the elections management body, which aims to use the Ghana Card as the only form of identification for voter registration prior to the general elections of 2024, has been criticized by the minority.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) and Electoral Commission representatives who appeared before the House on Thursday, February 23, were rejected by the opposition legislators.

After the House’s proceedings, South Dayi Rockson MP Nelson Dafeamekpor tweeted, “Yesterday, EC gave 1000 & 1 reasons why Jean Mensa couldn’t be in Parliament to address questions on her excessive desire for a new CI.

“The Minority stood its grounds: No Jean Mensa, No meeting. Guess what? She’s been flown in from Abuja. Her disrespect of Parliament has to end.”

However, the EC has swiftly responded to the claim and stated categorically that Jean Mensa had travelled to Nigeria to observe their elections there when the invitation was extended to her.

The electoral body added that Jean has not disrespected the legislature as being portrayed by the minority in parliament.

The release further added that the EC designated Dr Bossman Asare to represent the EC boss but the minority insisted they wanted Jean herself, leading to the cancellation of the proposed meeting.

Below is a press release to this effect.
