Jay-Z is taking legal action against attorney Tony Buzbee, accusing him of civil extortion, defamation, and causing intentional emotional distress.
The lawsuit follows the dismissal of a rape case filed against the rapper and music mogul, which was thrown out on February 14, 2025.
The original allegations, brought forward by an anonymous woman, accused Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards afterparty.
Despite the case being dismissed with prejudice—meaning it cannot be filed again—Jay-Z claims the false accusations have caused substantial personal and financial harm.

The timing of the lawsuit was particularly painful for Jay-Z, coinciding with the premiere of his daughter Blue Ivy’s film Mufasa: The Lion King. Jay-Z expressed the immense pressure he felt, torn between defending himself against the allegations and supporting his daughter during her big moment.
The lawsuit also highlights the severe financial consequences Jay-Z faced. The rapper revealed that the controversy led to a loss of $20 million in business contracts and endorsement deals, impacting his professional standing.
Beyond the financial losses, he described the emotional toll on his family, emphasizing the trauma his wife, children, and loved ones endured as a result of the defamatory claims.
Jay-Z referred to the court’s ruling as a “victory” but also stressed that the damage caused by the false accusations could never be fully undone.
This legal battle underlines the severe consequences of false allegations and demonstrates Jay-Z’s commitment to protecting his reputation and seeking justice.
