In a heartfelt interview during a memorial service held this week, Kenyan comedian Jasper Murume opened up about his past relationship with the late content creator Tabitha Gatwiri.
Though their romance is a chapter in his life that has long since closed, Murume took a moment to reflect on their time together and the deep bond that persisted between them even after their split.

“I don’t know if people knew, but Gatwiri was my girlfriend once,” Murume confessed to reporters. “But that was a long time ago. I’m married now with children.”
Despite the years that have passed since their relationship ended, Murume made it clear that the two of them managed to maintain a strong friendship.
Their professional paths continued to cross, as they frequently collaborated on comedy and video content. “What we did is that we made sure that we were never on bad terms with each other even after we broke up.
“We remained good friends,” he said, emphasizing the importance of keeping things amicable despite the end of their romantic relationship.
As he recalled their time together, Murume spoke fondly of a particular memory that stood out to him. “I remember when we went to her house, she went out of her way to make me feel comfortable. I didn’t have a costume at the time, and without hesitation, she gave me one of hers – a piece that was part of her brand. She told me she would find something else for me to wear.”
This gesture, Murume explained, was a clear demonstration of Gatwiri’s generosity and the warmth she showed him. “She was always thoughtful, always looking out for others. That’s who she was.”
Gatwiri, who was known for her vibrant content and comedic presence, had built a significant following in the Kenyan entertainment scene.

Though she was tragically lost too soon, her legacy continues to live on through her work and the people who remember her kindness and the mark she left on the comedy industry.
For Murume, the relationship with Gatwiri is one that he will always hold dear, not only because of their romantic history but also because of the genuine friendship that followed.
“Even though we went our separate ways, we always respected each other,” Murume said with a hint of nostalgia. “It’s not always easy to stay friends after a breakup, but with her, it just worked.”
Reflecting on her passing, Murume expressed his sorrow and admiration for Gatwiri’s impact on his life and career. “She was more than just a friend; she was a colleague, a mentor in some ways. We’ve lost a great soul, but we’ll carry her memory with us.”
